Members Monthly Meeting

Speaker – Barb the Kiltmaker (meeting in-person, presenter via Zoom). Social hour
begins at noon, the meeting will begin at 1:00pm at Good Shepherd’s Lutheran Church, 559
20th St. SW Rochester.

Kilts and tartan stand among the world’s most recognizable symbols of cultural affinity and kinship and represent one of the most distinctive and well-known examples of national dress. The tartan fabric itself, and the weaving of tartan fabric, are intimately linked with how traditional kilts are designed and constructed. In this presentation, you’ll learn a bit about the history of kilts and types of kilts, but the focus will be on tartan and on how the weaving of tartan influences the construction of kilts in general and controls the design of individual kilts.   Dr. Barbara Tewksbury is the author of The Art of Kiltmaking, a book designed to teach people how to make traditional kilts. She is a well-known kiltmaker and has made kilts for people all over the world.
