This group has two objectives, one, is exploring and sharing techniques that can embellish a fiber art piece and, two, is learning to dye fabrics with various dyeing methods, both synthetic and and natural.
Starting in 2026, we are combining the Surface Design and the Learning to Dye Focus groups. One month for hands on dyeing of a piece, then the next month to begin adding surface design to the dyed piece, and the third month to show finished pieces or those in progress. The group meets every month on the 4th Wednesday.
This focus group will explore four types of dye techniques during the year. Some possibilities are dyeing synthetic fibers, cellulose fibers such as cotton and bamboo, or protein-based fibers such as silk and wool. Some techniques may use snow, flowers and leaves, sunshine, wax and more.
Surface Design techniques may include printing, painting, resists, stitching/needle work, stamping, stenciling, embossing, monoprint, and many others.
