Four ZRFAG members took a class at the Nome Schoolhouse this past week working in the Fiber Mill. Laurice Johnson, Cathy Manduca, Elaine Paulsen and Sandy Evans learned how a fiber mill works, from cleaning and sorting raw wool, to dyeing and painting the wool, making roving, spinning the yarn, felting the wool, cutting shapes and embellishing. Plus, the school is fixing up the nearby barn so that they can have different types of sheep, llamas and even a camel, to help educate people on where our fibers come from and how they differ after processing. It was a fast paced two days, but a fantastic class. The good food and ambiance of the school house retreat center, made for a wonderful retreat. The enthusiasm of the mill’s owner, Chris Armburst was contagious.
